We are suspending Workshops for the 2019 Convention

Worshops for 2018

Erez Morag teaching his 2016 workshop. An attendee examines their parts for Erez Morag's 2016 workshop.

Workshops are in-depth hands-on training on specific areas of interest to LEGO builders. There is an additional fee for each workshop that covers materials, parts, instructions, and other costs associated with the workshop. All workshops take place on the Hyatt Regency's 2nd floor, either in the Bayshore Room (Thursday) or the Camino Real Room (Thursday through Saturday).

All child attendees must be accompanied by an adult who must have their own badge, but adults who are only present to supervise their children do not need to enroll in the workshop or pay the workshop fees. However, please enroll and pay for the workshop if you are interested in learning the material or want your own kit.

Note: Each person can only be in one workshop for each session (time slot).

A new section of Workshop FAQs has been added at the bottom.

Workshops are for convention attendees only. To attend Bricks by the Bay, click here to register. If you are already registered click here to sign up for workshops.

~ Thursday ~

Building in Ramshackle Style

Instructor: Flynn De Marco
Time: Thursday, July 12, 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
Location: Bayshore Room
Cost: $99

LEGO® makes perfect buildings, perfect cars, perfect spaceships, and perfect everything else. But sometimes you don’t want something quite so perfect. Sometimes you want something that looks lived in or forgotten about. In this class, you will build a scene that consists of a ramshackle hut with a crumbling wall and an old well. By employing techniques that make use of small pieces in a variety of colors, you will learn how to create a scene that has a more organic and “falling down” feeling as compared to a well kept apartment building or skyscraper. Building techniques will include: round structures, color mixing, curved walls and placing your structures on an angle. Due to the size and complexity of this kit, registration is limited to builders 16+.

LEGO® Animation

Instructor: Dave Pickett, Keynote Speaker
Time: Thursday, July 12, 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Location: Camino Real Room
Cost: $25

Learn how to make epic LEGO® animations using your LEGO® collection and simple household materials. Dave Pickett, author of The LEGO® Animation Book, will guide you through the process step-by-step and provide tips and tricks to take your movies to the next level. The workshop will conclude with a mini film festival where we'll screen the brickfilms that everyone has made. You'll need to bring your own smart phone to use when creating your animation. We'll provide some basic bricks and minifigures, but feel free to bring a favorite MOC or LEGO® set to animate.

This workshop will be repeated Friday morning. If both workshop sessions fill up we will add a session or two on Saturday.

Stressed Construction

Instructor: Charles Esseltine
Time: Thursday, July 12, 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Location: Bayshore Room
Cost: $56

Have you ever wanted to build a round wall, or a curved one? Have you ever wanted to make a 3- or 5- (or more) sided building? In this class we will discuss various methods of using stressed building techniques in your MOCs. Stressed structures use the slight give that all LEGO® elements have to stretch the boundaries of legal assembly methods. We will explore three different builds, including a round lantern. LED candle included. Don't worry, we will work to contain the explosions... but not the fun!

Fonts and Lettering

Instructor: Li Li
Time: Thursday, July 12, 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Location: Camino Real Room
Cost: $41

Explore brick-built fonts designed by the instructor and his approach to designing fonts with LEGO® elements. You'll get to build three different fonts yourself, ranging from small to large. Hopefully, by the end of the workshop you'll be inspired to create your own fonts. (This workshop is repeated on Saturday.)

Towers and Tall Structures

Instructor: Erez Morag
Time: Thursday, July 12, 3:30 pm - 6:30 pm
Location: Bayshore Room
Cost: $95

In this workshop we will explore different techniques for achieving height in a stable manner. We will cover both brick-oriented solutions and Technic-oriented solutions for building towers and for stabilizing existing models. The kit includes enough pieces for a few different modes of construction, including a truss tower designed to store or display your 32x32 baseplates.

Erez Morag is Workshop Coordinator and a returning workshop instructor. He taught 2016's Motorize Your MOCs workshop and is often remembered as that guy who made the water fountain and the desk fan.

Welcome to the Dark Side

Instructors: Kara Campbell
Time: Thursday, July 12, 3:30 pm - 6:30 pm
Location: Camino Real Room
Cost: $51

Expand your building options with this introduction to altering standard LEGO® elements. We’ll first have a discussion with many examples to illustrate why you may want -- or need -- to alter a LEGO® element. Then, using simple hand tools, you will receive hands-on experience with cutting, sanding, and drilling as you build a small diorama. The kit will include everything you need for this workshop, including gloves, safety goggles, and tools for in-class use. We will also provide shopping recommendations so you can put together your own brick-altering toolkit once you get home. Due to the presence of sharp tools and chemicals -- albeit of the standard household variety -- this workshop is limited to attendees who are 18 years of age and older.

If you're interested in this topic but aren't quite ready to commit, please join us for a (free) presentation/discussion later in the weekend.

This is a repeat of last year's Welcome to the Dark Side workshop for those who weren't able to make it.
